The number of older people in the EU-27 is expected to increase significantly, with the population of those aged 65 years or more projected to reach 129.8 million by 2050, representing a significant expansion from the 100.5 million recorded at the beginning of 2024. All these people need help and care.

This can be a challenging task that puts immense physical and mental strain on caregivers, both professionally and personally. LideBonus research states that 56% of caregivers suffer from a reduced state of health. To ease this burden, Stormotion together with LifeBonus created an app with a team of certified healthcare professionals and caregivers.

Challenge

The LifeBonus app answers crucial questions about providing care, including the amount required, the availability of support, the living situation, and more. It’s intended to support caregivers in better task management while also promoting their own health.

LifeBonus needed a mobile app to ease the strain on caregivers while ensuring quality care for the elderly. We developed an app with AI-driven exercise tracking, certified care advisor guidance, and stress-relief resources, helping caregivers manage tasks efficiently and maintain their well-being.

Product

Based on the project scope, we identified four key areas requiring extra attention.

1. Technical Complexity. Working with AWS presented challenges in managing programming logic, cloud services, and configurations. We used AWS Lambda for scalable, serverless computing and Terraform to track and maintain configurations securely, ensuring reliability and efficiency.

2. Exercise Tracking Accuracy. Designing AI/ML algorithms to accurately track body movements and assess exercise effectiveness required precise calibration and iterative testing.

3. User Accessibility. We had to ensure a seamless and intuitive user interface for a diverse audience, including non-tech-savvy caregivers, was critical.

4. Content Updates. We needed to continuously expand and update care-related resources to ensure they remain relevant for evolving caregiving scenarios.

Process

A dedicated team of specialists was involved in developing the LifeBonus application, including 2 developers, a project manager, a QA specialist, a UI/UX designer, and a DevOps engineer. It took about 31 weeks to deliver the app to the client.

Solution

We implemented the following solutions to address the main challenges of LifeBonus project.

To ensure scalability and reliability, we used AWS Lambda for lightweight, on-demand computing. To tackle the complexity of configuration management, we implemented Terraform, which allowed us to define and store infrastructure configurations as code, making it easier to track changes and maintain security and reliability across the system.

Our developers integrated ML Kit, an advanced tool for machine learning, to capture and analyze the user's body movements during exercises. This feature allows LifeBonus to evaluate ten different exercises via smartphone’s camera and provide real-time feedback, ensuring that the caregiver receives an accurate assessment of their movements and the effectiveness of each exercise.

We designed the user interface with simplicity and clarity in mind, using intuitive navigation and easy-to-understand icons and text. This design approach ensures that even those without technical expertise can easily navigate through the LifeBonus app, access important features, and receive guidance without frustration.

Product

To provide caregivers with up-to-date content, we built a flexible content management system that allows for regular updates and the addition of new caregiving resources. This ensures that users always have access to up-to-date information, such as new services, caregiving tips, and health-related advice, helping them adapt to changing care needs and stay informed.

Success for LifeBonus from a:

PM Perspective

The project was successfully delivered within 31 weeks, adhering to Agile principles and a carefully structured roadmap. We maintained consistent communication with product owners throughout the project, ensuring that the app's features aligned with the needs of caregivers. By breaking down the process into manageable sprints and tracking milestones closely, we avoided delays and delivered on time.

Development Perspective

We integrated cutting-edge AI and ML algorithms to enhance the app’s functionality, particularly in the exercise tracking and caregiver support features. Working with AWS Lambda allowed us to scale the app effectively and handle large amounts of data, ensuring that the system remained responsive and reliable, even during high-traffic periods.

UI/UX Perspective

The LifeBonus app interface was crafted to be straightforward, with features designed to reduce complexity and provide a seamless user experience. By continuously gathering feedback from caregivers, we refined the UI/UX to ensure it met their needs, making it easier for them to manage their care tasks while maintaining their well-being.

QA Perspective

Our QA Engineer rigorously tested the app’s stability and functionality, particularly with the AI-driven exercise tracking feature. This thorough testing process helped us achieve a near-flawless user experience, with minimal post-launch bugs and a high level of trust from users.

DevOps Perspective

Terraform played a key role in managing the app’s cloud infrastructure, enabling us to automate deployments and ensure consistent configuration management. Proactive monitoring and cloud optimizations helped us maintain system stability and guarantee the app’s availability.

Overall Business / Roadmap Perspective

The project achieved its goals, with caregiver efficiency increasing by 30% and a reported 25% reduction in caregiver stress, as highlighted in user surveys. With an impressive 4.8 rating on the App Store and 4.2 on Google Play, the app’s popularity and effectiveness in addressing caregivers' needs are evident.
